The Yellow Turtle Inn has been around long before the Civil War.
The original house is a log cabin. The logs from a cabin were taken down and rolled from 3 miles away and re-assembled in New Windsor during the 1840s. To think this house saw the Union Army pass by on the way to Gettysburg in 1865.
There is a burying grounds on the property with stones dated 1869.
A letter was found in this house that was written in 1930. The lady writing stated that the Blue Ridge College across the street from the Inn was shut down during the Civil War because the "boys were paying with Confederate Money and were shooting at each other". There were both Confederate and Union students. These buildings are now the Brethren Conference Center and can be seen from the Yellow Turtle Inn.
Maryland was a "free state" but is south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
Discover the Civil War Trail and then return to a part of history at the Yellow Turtle Inn for a private dinner in the original "log cabin" portion of the Inn and then adjourn to the original "summer kitchen" for a couples massage.
